The Calm in the Eye of the Storm

Day in the Life Photo Essay: Dalton LaFerney

The Calm in the Eye of the Storm

Dalton LaFerney, 21, is the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, the North Texas Daily. This position takes up a majority of his time, especially during print night when the editors come the night before the newspaper is going to print to edit and layout. During the 9-5 business hours, the UNT senior lugs his briefcase bag from meeting to meeting with various people: NT Daily staff, editorial staff, advisors, administration, and colleagues.

LaFerney is most needed on print night, which is every Wednesday. He is key for the production of the NT Daily to come out in print on Thursday morning. His leadership style is to never yell, but his authority in the newsroom is ever present. LaFerney makes his rounds to the editorial desks during print night, asking or answering questions and sharing moments of newsroom jokes and pranks with his editors.

Commitment and leadership skills are essential to the position of editor-in-chief. LaFerney has to be the one everyone goes to for answers but he continues to have a calm attitude. Within the chaos of producing a newspaper, LaFerney takes a deep breath and steps out as the dedicated editor-in-chief he is.

For the Dogs

Photo Story: Dogs of Hilltown

For the Dogs

Dogs of Hilltown is a nonprofit animal rescue that works in an unincorporated area of Denton County outside of Little Elm. The rural area is populated by low-income residents, who have named this area Hilltown. Due to the remote location, people take the opportunity to use the area in order to get rid of unwanted dogs or litters of puppies. The residents also let their dogs roam around without proper animal care, which leads to a cycle of a neglected life for these injured and pregnant strays.

The volunteer group works to end this cycle through outreach and adoption. One of their outreach programs includes a daily street feeding. The volunteers take turns driving around the area to put out bowls of dog food and water. The strays come out from under broken porches or a tangle of bushes and weeds to have a meal. Another outreach program is to provide proper dog education to the residents of Hilltown and offering their services to their own personal dogs as well. Dogs of Hilltown hosts adoption events every weekend in order to get the dogs out of Hilltown, in foster homes for rehabilitation, and then to a loving family as quickly as possible.
