The Calm in the Eye of the Storm
Dalton LaFerney, 21, is the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, the North Texas Daily. This position takes up a majority of his time, especially during print night when the editors come the night before the newspaper is going to print to edit and layout. During the 9-5 business hours, the UNT senior lugs his briefcase bag from meeting to meeting with various people: NT Daily staff, editorial staff, advisors, administration, and colleagues.
LaFerney is most needed on print night, which is every Wednesday. He is key for the production of the NT Daily to come out in print on Thursday morning. His leadership style is to never yell, but his authority in the newsroom is ever present. LaFerney makes his rounds to the editorial desks during print night, asking or answering questions and sharing moments of newsroom jokes and pranks with his editors.
Commitment and leadership skills are essential to the position of editor-in-chief. LaFerney has to be the one everyone goes to for answers but he continues to have a calm attitude. Within the chaos of producing a newspaper, LaFerney takes a deep breath and steps out as the dedicated editor-in-chief he is.
